Welcome to Year 4!

Our day to visit the library will be a Tuesday so please return your library books on Mondays.

In Year 4, children are encouraged to choose their own reading books to take home. We have a range of books in the class and the school library, including ones from reading schemes for those who would still benefit from them, these books are colour banded to allow children to choose effectively. We would encourage children to read with an adult daily or as often as possible at home.

PE will be on a Thursday but we ask that children keep their PE kits in their lockers at all times.  Our PE kit consists of a house-coloured top (as worn on sports days), dark shorts/ bottoms and appropriate footwear. No football kits.  Please remember to tie up hair and remove earrings on PE days.  Please note, children will still need a separate PE kit in school as children are not allowed to take part in PE in outdoor learning clothing.

Outdoor Learning is every other Thursday children should come in dressed ready for outdoor learning.  What is worn can be weather dependent as the children are outside without the option of this being inside for these sessions. Jeans and shorts are not to be worn due to the nature of activities children may take part in during these sessions. Arms and legs are to be covered (to protect against scratches and nettles) and clothing (including shoes) should be suitable to get dirty -we do have a mud kitchen in the outdoor learning space, and it can get a little boggy!

Times Tables

At this stage, times tables become a major focus of children's learning. The school subscribes to Times Table Rockstars which is available on most devices as a website or an app. Children are encouraged to play at least 5 minutes of times table games at least 3 times a week at home, as well as working on times tables in class, and there are always various competitions and incentives throughout the year.

Relationships & Sex Education

We believe that promoting the health and wellbeing of our pupils is an important part of their overall education. The aim of our PSHE curriculum is to help pupils make safe and informed decisions during their school years and beyond.

Our Year 4 RSE curriculum will cover the following:

  • The NSPCC Pants rule. During these discussions we will aim to teach our pupils the following important safety skills without giving explicit information or telling scary stories. We will be teaching our pupils the NSPCC’s Underwear Rule, using the ‘PANTS’ acrostic, which is like a green cross code for staying safe from sexual abuse.
  • Basic facts about puberty and the human lifecycle.
  • How puberty is linked to reproduction.
  • To explore respect in a range of relationships.
  • Internal and external reproductive body parts, body changes in girls and boys, including menstruation.
